i like to think when annabeth and percy get married percy takes annabeths last name
i feel like the name “percy jackson” has so much history connected to so much trauma and it’s known by so many monsters/gods alike that he’s just done with it he just wants a new beginning and takes annabeths last name to symbolize that
maybe they name their first kid jackson giving that name a new meaning
instead of jackson the name following destroyer attached to a killer of thousands of monsters a hero of olympus twice over its jackson, maybe just jack for short, a baby something of life a kid who gets to grow up a kid rather then a soldier someone meant to live not told to die
i like the idea that no one really thinks that’s gonna happen maybe sally jokes with annabeth that she’ll be the new mrs jackson maybe people even talk about the power that name holds (literally lmao)
then during one of the nights their planning their wedding they’re curled up together percy’s head against her chest getting ready for bed and percy confesses how much that name has haunted him
maybe annabeth confesses that she’s always liked her last name and though she didn’t care enough to fight against the name change she’s more then happy to keep it
maybe she’s the first person to call percy by that new name that night, whispering it against the top of his head
perseus chase, percy chase, mrs and mr chase
maybe it doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way but maybe that’s also the whole point

names hold power. perseus, the destroyer. percy, the hero.
Tumblr media
the gods refer to percy as perseus, the name connects him to the gods through his namesake, while mortals refer to him as percy. This duality reflects the two halves of his identity as a demigod - half god, half mortal. it's part of the reason why percy loathes being called perseus. he doesn't fully side with the gods, he doesn't want to be associated with them. percy isn't perseus, a namesake he feels constantly inferior to. yet the gods fear perseus, to some degree. perseus does not over power an olympian, sure, but perseus means the avenger, the destroyer. gods knew of the great prophecy way before perseus. ' Olympus to preserve or raze ' a demigod that was not supposed to be born, in a universe where names hold power, named the destroyer? it is not far fetched for the gods to be at least wary of perseus, it’s shown in their actions. every year as they inch closer and closer to perseus' 16th birthday, the gods wanted to kill him. that is fear. percy’s identity, rooted in being sally jackson’s son, rather than the son of poseidon, is what connects him to his mortality. while the gods are humanised, they lack the fundamentals of humanity. percy is a tool to remind them of the mortality of demigods. the experiences percy had growing up built the character of his identity. the abuse he endured, the love he was given by sally. these experiences the gods will never experience is what makes percy - percy and not perseus. now, there are instances where percy does go by perseus. when his memories were erased by hera. lupa only referred to percy as perseus so it makes sense that percy would go by perseus during that timeframe in heroes of olympus - he doesn't know better. he is missing the memories that create percy. in verses where percy is more connected with the gods such as his prince of the seas verse and patron god of heroes verse - percy does go by perseus. in his prince of the seas verse, percy is born as a minor olympian, entirely disconnected from human experiences. then for his patron god of heroes verse, where he accepts godhood at the end of the last olympian, he starts off still going by percy but over time, he begins to forget his humanity as his loved ones eventually die off. its after the death of annabeth does percy begin to fully accept the identity of perseus. in percy's kronos verse, percy fully accepts being perseus the moment he joins the titan army. the name loses its association to the gods and rather the meaning of his name. perseus is the destroyer and the avenger. he will destroy olympus to avenge his mother. ultimately, the disconnect between percy and perseus is something i always thought was overlooked. i personally believe that it highlights the conflicting realms of being a demigod by showing how percy struggles to balance his identity. percy embodies both the destructive power of the gods and the compassionate flawed humanity.

Iron Man vs Superman!
Conditions:
MCU Iron Man vs Injustice Superman. Tony in the Mark 85. Superman does not have the Yellow Lantern Ring or Kryptech suit.
Scenario:
Insurgency Batman tries to summon heroes from an alternate universe to stop Superman's regime, accidentally bringing in the Avengers instead of alternate versions of his own friends. The Avengers agree to help stop Superman anyways, engaging his regime in the battle for Metropolis. As the groups clash, Tony takes the chance to head off Superman himself at his base at the Fortress of Solitude.
Analysis: Superman
Superman. The Man of Tomorrow turned the Tyrant of Today. The Clark Kent of the Injustice universe led a life very similar in the broad strokes to the Superman of our world. Until, one day, everything changed when The Joker instigated a terrorist attack on Metropolis. Superman was tricked into killing his pregnant wife Lois, setting off a bomb that leveled his home city. Millions died and Superman was changed forever.
Forcing a no-war and no crime policy, Superman instigated a dictatorship over the Earth, turning similarly traumatized heroes to his cause and ruling with an iron fist. Batman would start an underground insurgency against the Man of Steel, as Clark took to eliminating crime by any means necessary. Even if it meant killing heroes.
Superman is easily the most powerful hero-turned-villain on Earth. To such an extent that the Insurgency requires Kryptonite Nanotech pills to increase their durability several thousand times over just to stand a chance. He has all the baseline powers a Superman iteration would need. He can fly across the world in seconds, see and lobotomize you from space with heat and x-ray vision, hear you all the time all around the world, and freeze entire waves of the ocean with his frost breath before chucking them like they're made of paper. He's even fast enough to get past Brainiac's shields, which can regenerate within 10 picoseconds (0.00000000001 seconds) and take hits from General Zod, who can drill people through the Earth.
What's worse, is his brain can more than back up his brawn. His supercomputer brain can effectively fly Brainiac's ship, he lures Mogo the Living Planet to Earth to keep from bringing his full power to bare (knowing he won't risk innocent lives), and he fatally injures Superboy and uses his critical state to manipulate the Titans into letting him trap them in the Phantom Zone.
Also, like all fascists, he can effectively use Twitter:
Tumblr media
Superman reigned virtually unopposed for five years, killing any who stood against his wrath. He's battled the Gods of Olympus, the alien planet destroyer Brainiac, and even He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. He inspired so much fear he was permitted to wield a Yellow Lantern ring for a time. Ultimately, however, Batman would summon heroic counterparts of his fallen friends to turn the tide and Superman would be overthrown by his mainline self. While he may be the most powerful being on his Earth, that doesn't necessarily apply to parallel worlds.
It doesn't help that he still has the classic Superman weaknesses. On top of his vulnerability to kryptonite and red sun radiation, the Clark is a lot less.... stable then most. His grief over his wife has turned into a single minded obsession, causing him to plan to conquer another Earth just to have her back, and he's developed a massive ego, driving him into a rage the more a situation spirals from his control and prompting him to violently lash out against criticism.
Despite his short reign, Superman is still, far and away, the biggest threat to Earth's people on the planet. The Tyrant of Steel and a chilling reminder of just how far even the best of heroes can fall.
Analysis: Iron Man
Iron Man. The movie that kickstarted a cinematic universe that continues to this day, with over half of them centering around the man in a can himself. Tony Stark, much like his comic book counterpart, was once a ruthless war profiteer and shameless party boy, living it up at the expense of whoever gets killed by his weapons. Until the day he saw the horrors of war for himself, blown up by his own bomb and taken hostage by terrorists. As such, Tony built himself an arc reactor heart to keep himself alive and used it to power his very first suit of armor, returning to the world as Iron Man and putting his blood soaked past behind him.
What Tony didn't realize was that he'd just stepped into a much bigger universe, one full of gods and monsters for him to fight. Threats that humanity couldn't handle, but he could. He'd join a group of remarkable people, the Avengers, to fight the battles mankind could not.
Along the way, he'd invent an entire legion of Iron Man armors. But none compare to the magnificent Mark 85, an upgraded version of the previous Bleeding Edge. This nanotech marvel retains all of the advantages of Stark's previous suits, providing flight, palm mounted repulser blasts, missles, on board tactical AI in the form of FRIDAY and the works. Tony can breathe underwater, survive the vacuum of space, hack into opposing technology, and analyze your fighting style to counter it with onboard AI.
Thanks to the Mark 85's uogrades, the suit is now mobile, capable of forming around Tony and regenerating itself via its supply of nanomachines. Tony can form weapons and shields with this armor, shoot lasers, and absorb energy from Thor to empower himself. Coolant blasts can freeze people solid, Suture Spray can rapidly heal critical wounds, and Magnetic Clamps can restrain foes to nearby surfaces.
With suits like these, Tony was able to fight alongside and against Earth's mightiest heroes and deadliest threats, like the thousand year old thunder god Thor, the God of Mischief Loki, the Incredible Hulk, and Thanos, the Mad Titan. Though, for all his intelligence and skill, he has his shortcomings.
For example, when his attempt to create a suit of armor around the world created its biggest threat to it: Ultron. Or when his attempt to buddy buddy with the US led to the outbreak of a Civil War between suoerheroes. Tony's attempts at making a better world can sometimes create more problems than it solves. Combined with his occasional self destructive bits of alcoholism and the PTSD he gained from the Battle of New York and you have an Avenger with a lot of squishy weaknesses under his armor.
But, for all of his flaws, Tony Stark was still the man who saved the world, giving his life to undo the snap that wiped out half the universe. Deep down, this man of iron had a heart of gold.
Throwdown Breakdown:
A interesting note to make about this fight. When using these versions of Iron Man and Superman specifically, neither really has any experience against an opponent much like the other. Tony has flat out never met Hyperion in the MCU, whereas in Injustice, Lex Luthor was never a supervillain and never fought Superman. The time when they did actually fight, Clark curbstomped immediately became Shazam short circuted Lex's armor. So both are fighting blind here.
Both should be fairly on par in terms of experience, having frequently fought the otherwordly monsters and thousand year old gods common to their universes, but Tony has an advantage in closer quarters due to FRIDAY analyzing Clark's fighting style and automatically adjusting the suit to counter it. Abilities, however, are a bit more complicated....
Tony's suit should be heat resistant enough to make a shield to block Clark's heat vision, but ice breathe isn't so easy to counter. Supes can freeze people who can fly through the cold of space unaffected, something none of Tony's armors have resisted. Not only could Clark use the ice to shatter Tony's suit, he could also use it to keep him from repairing it, leaving Tony a vulnerable squishy human underneath. While Tony also has freeze tech, the most he's ever done with it is freeza a hole in a spaceship and that wasn't even in combat.
Though, for what it's worth, ice breath generally requires Clark to get somewhat close, which Tony could potentially counter by keeping his distance. The problem on that front being that MCU Tony is often very quick to fly in close and throw hands and while FRIDAY can provide tactical analysis, her ability to analyze an alien being like Superman is suspect. FRIDAY certainly never chimed in with tactical data on Thanos during the fight and against beings like Thor, Tony had to puzzle out their abilities himself. FRIDAY isn't so advanced that he can magically know things because of it. Whereas Clark can use his x-ray vision and see that Tony is a regular human under that suit.
Superman meanwhile is very quick to abuse his powers in ruthless ways. Like how against Shazam, he froze Billy's mouth shut and lasered his brains out. Iron Man absolutely has the kit to win here if he knows what he's getting into and if both had prior knowledge of each other, I could see this going much differently.
Here's how this fight would roughly play out. Superman fires heat vision. Tony blocks with his shield, then dodges around to charge in for the melee. Both characters trade blows with each other, throwing each other around, trading repulser blasts with eye lasers. As Tony's AI adapts to Clark's fighting style and he starts landing stabs, Clark breaks out the freeze breath. Seeing Iron Man's armor regenerate after shattering it, he freezes it mid process to trap Tony.
Then he does this:

It looks like Tony's going to need an Avenger.

Alternative AU, My AU
Hi, good morning, I'm Seven and English is not my first language, so I'm sorry if I have grammatical mistakes, it's the first thing I tell you and also that it motivates me to upload my own AU of Percy Jackson a bit of Magnus Chase and the Kane Chronicles but We start with PJO, what will it be called?  "Alternative AU" that name is for the three sagas, what is it about?  Well, as we well know Percy is a demigod and he is the son of Poseidon, god of the sea, well in my AU it is the other way around, Poseidon is the demigod and Percy the god of the sea and so on with everyone, I leave you the list and a short summary Gods: Hestia goddess of the home: it could be said that she does not have changes, only those of who her brothers are Kaite goddess of agriculture etc: She takes the role of Demeter the second eldest Sister Hera goddess of marriage, Queen of Olympus, etc: the only change in her is that instead of being the wife of Zeus she is Jason's Nico god of the dead and King of the underworld, etc: He takes the role of Hades which makes him be married to Persephone but she accepts that he is with Will since she is still the Queen of the underworld in the same way Percy god of the Sea and King of Atlantis, etc: He takes the role of Poseidon Jason god of heaven and King of Olympus etc: He takes the role of Zeus They are like this from oldest to youngest, the same as how the 6 children of cronos were born Piper goddess of love: in the original story Aphrodite marries Hephaestus but here Piper does not marry Leo since for me they are and will always be friends or treat each other as brothers Clarisse goddess of war: she takes the role of Ares and is dating Chirs whom she cheated on once with Piper Chirs god of thieves, etc: he takes the role of Hermes just like Aphrodite deceived Hephaestus with Ares, Clarisse deceived Chris once with Piper after that the events that originally had to happen happened, in another blog I do the more detailed history of them Sherman god of fear: Sherman takes the role of Phobos and is the son of Clarisse and Piper, the product of an infidelity Ellis god of terror: Ellis takes the role of Deimos and is also the son of Clarisse and Piper product of the same infidelity Mark destroyer of cities: Mark takes the role of Enio the Sister of Ares, son of Hera and brother of Clarisse Annabeth goddess of wisdom, etc: She takes the role of Athena and if she argues a lot with percy but they don't have a rivalry like Poseidon and Athena Leo god of fire, etc: He takes the role of Hephaestus and a bit of his history and he is still Piper's friend or even sometimes they are called brothers Will god of the sun, etc: he takes the role of Apollo and before you ask no, he does not have the personality of Apollo oh his ego, he is just Will and Nico's boyfriend Thalia goddess of the moon and a hunter, the original is the hunters of artemis, here are Thalia's hunters and by the way I tell you that Will and Thalia are twin brothers just like Apollo and Artemis Pollux and Castor gods of wine, etc: in this case Pollux takes the role of Dionysus as director of the camp, Pollux has the punishment of not drinking wine, while Castor remains on Olympus and sometimes goes to the camp to see his brother Now we go with those who will be the Demigods and will have their last names but only the ones that change Demigods:   Demeter Gardner: She takes the role of Kaite in this story   Hades Di Angelo: He has the same story as Nico, only for reasons of age he will be the second oldest of his "cousins" Zeus and Poseidon but the tallest of the three and that is why they consider him as an older brother even though he is not. and is the closest to poseidon   Poseidon Jackson: takes the role of Percy and all his history, he will be the greatest between Hades and Zeus since he is the hero of the prophecy, he also has a rivalry with Jason and Clarisse just like Percy has with Ares and Zeus in the original ,   Zeus Grace: she is a mix between Thalia and Jason (more Thalia than anything else), Zeus being the one who ran away from home and then met Luke, he was the one who became the tree that protects the camp, he is the youngest among hades and poseidon   Aphrodite Mclean: she is the one who replaces Piper and is Ares's girlfriend   Ares La Rue: she assumes the role of Clarisse and as always having her rivalry with Athena, she is dating Aphrodite but here Hephaestus has nothing to do   Phobos Yang: Take the role of Sherman   Deimos Yang: that would be the role of Ellis wakefield but I am not going to separate two twins like Phobos and Deimos   Enio: she would be the one to play Mark but she doesn't have a last name   Athena Chase: she takes the role of Annabeth and her whole story in this AU, she ran away from home at a young age and soon met Zeus and Luke, just like Annabeth in the original, Athena has a cousin Einherjar but that's what I'm talking about in another blog and before they ask no, there will be no Poseitena, I don't like it Hephaestus Valdez: he takes Leo's place, unfortunately he also takes his insecurities but Dionisio or little Harley are there for him if he feels bad   Apollo solace: he assumes the role of Will but he is still a first class egocentric although he also has an Egyptian friend and an einherjar friend but these two will be discussed in other blogs   Artemis solace: Artemis is not a demigod, just a hunter but she has the last name of Apollo and they are twins from different fathers   Hermes Rodríguez: takes the role of Chirs and is Apolo's best friend   Dionysus (no last name): takes Pollux's place as his son and Castor's nephew

!!!MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR DOOM ETERNAL TAG2!!!
So I played DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part 2 and it absolutely rocked!
But the one thing is would criticise story wise is the Slayer being interned atop Ingmore's Sanctum.
Call me crazy but I don't think they deserved that. They have part of the Dark Lord's soul so shouldn't have the rest of it been reformed within them? The rite of combat was what annihilated all demons outside of hell- not the death of their primeval. It feels like a slow-burn betrayal by The Father as a build up towards whatever may come next. Be it DOOM 6 or QUAKE 5.
But after everything the Slayer did, they deserved a rest. They deserved to at least live among the people that they saved after Eternal and TAG.
Not as their servent, nor their guide towards becoming something more.
To them, Humanity was worth saving- end of story. Doesn't matter if some of them fall prey to the temptation of Hell, or if they swear loyalty to Divine Aliens. The good in humanity far outweighs the bad.
But I don't think they'd 'bask in devotion' as it were. Not as some divine messianic figure or a God-Empruh of Man.
Where has devotion gotten Humanity? The Argenta? The Immoran's?
Devotion to Idols and Gods and to People gave them the Khan Maykr, it gave them The Father.
It gave them Davoth.
The Slayer walked the path of perpetual torment and eternal glory.
They saved humanity and they will do so again.
As an Eternal Hero, as the Destroyer, as the God-Killer.
As the DOOM Slayer. The Ultimate Paragade of their Civilisation.
But they're not a soldier doing their duty or a merc on a job.
The Slayer is a Warrior-King. They no longer fight to live. They live to fight.
In times of conflict, of war- they lead from the front. As the Ultimate Vanguard. As the First and Last line of defense against annihilation.
In absense of conflict they stand ever vigilant over their people, watching over them. Defending the Weak, so that they may become strong.
And teaching the strong to defend and empower the weak, so that when the armies of Steel and Thunder come; they may never stand alone.
Because Peace, true peace, is found within. Not in the absence of conflict.
And they are so much more than a vessel of eternal fury.
So in the coming years as countless refugees from Immora arrive on Earth seeking a new home, as millions of Argenta leave the liberated Argent D'nur seeking bonds of fellowship across the stars, as humanity reclaims their homewolrd from the clutches of hell; the single most asked question among so many people is this-
"What happened to the Slayer? Where did they go?"
The official answer will be; "You see that green light flying across the sky? That same light the Argenta salute when they see it flying over head? That light that the Immoran's look to with sorrow? That no-fly zone ARC Command has created around a that great fortress in orbit? They're up there. Watching over us"
And that's right, the Slayer is up there. They have no reason to be on Earth. They have far more important things to do.
They totally didn't walk into a New York pizzaria last week and order a Ranch BBQ pizza with pineapple; only to return a day later in the late evening after helping to rebuild the apartment block across the street to order food for everyone working on the construction site.
They didn't walk into a beach bar in Egypt and spend the night sitting in the corner, quietly drinking Bone Vodka with some old Argenta bloke, bearing facial scars and a cataracted eye- didn't embrace him as he quietly wept as the other Argenta in the bar saluted them both and asked to sit with them.
He was apparently a Commander of some sort? No Human knows the story. All the Argenta will say is "He redeemed himself in his valour, we merely asked when he would forgive himself"
They didn't climb Mount Olympus on Mars, accompanying climbers with a host of crimson-armoured warriors to the peak of the mountain, didn't help them build a shrine, didn't set down a horned helmet and entomb a Crucible Sword and Shield upon it- only to vanish before they could start the trek back to base camp; leaving these 'elite warriors of Immora' to walk with these Humans of Earth back home. To their new home.
The UAC, too rich and powerful to ever be destroyed or dissolved, has since failed to evict or indenture the People of Immora. They were commanded to live and find peace on a world much like ancient Jakkad- not submit to the UAC.
They didn't attend a University graduation in the rebuilt ARC Complex, now a memorial site of the battle that turned the tide of the War against hell; celebrating the success of an honoured former Intern.
Rumour has it, Doctor #Redacted# has begun reverse engineering the #Redacted# per the personnel request of #Redacted#. But no one knows the truth.
They didn't pull a child out of the way of an oncoming train in Tokyo, didn't stop a woman from getting raped in Tijuana, didn't help some nomads fix their cars engines in the Afghanistan, didn't walk through the streets of every city in the world tossing what must have been billions in so many different currencies to the poor and homeless.
And they sure as heck didn't appear, unarmoured and furious, to destroy Neo-Nazi Zerstroyers that emerged from beneath the catacombs of Berlin.
You can't prove he stood at the grave of William Joseph Blazkowitz and paid their respects.
You can't prove that was them.
Why would they help rebuild the bonds of fellowship between The Betrayer and The Night Sentinels?
Why would they give the Elite of Immora, the closest and most loyal to the Dark Lord- a world as red as Jakkad, reflected in the colour of their armour- than force the greenry of Earth or the Silver of Argent D'Nur upon them.
Why would they roam the world, seeing justice delivered as it recovers and rebuilds itself.
Surely the DOOM Slayer has many more important things to do than help heal the world- then making sure the world that they saved doesn't become one where kindness is a weakness.

magnificently cursed
Annabeth kisses Percy Jackson at the winter solstice; because of this, things may turn out for the better—or is it the other way around? The only thing she knows for certain is that she has a special loathing for fatal flaws and prophecies.
or,
A canon divergent au in which many things happen at once.
read on ao3
Dum spiro, spero
(While I breathe, I hope.)
That was one of the first Latin phrases Chiron had taught her, all those years ago. It was what she hung on to when life carried on by a thread.
And when she’d been left, alone, to die, that was what she remembered. And also rocks, and blood, piling up on her. She’d begun to think that that was the only way of life. Rocks and blood.
Or maybe it wasn’t blood, maybe her vision had been drowned in scarlet. And maybe those weren’t rocks.
No, it was a fact that those weren’t rocks.
In her feeble brain, she knew. This was the sky.
This was the world.
But she couldn’t give up, because then everything would come crashing down. She’d die anyway, but the rest of humanity, Luke...they still had a chance.
Percy still had a chance.
But it was a ravenous pain, holding the world. One that gathered on her shoulders like burning steel and flowed through the rest of her body in a river of magma.
Dum spiro, spero.
While I breathe, I hope.
But she could barely breathe.
The weight of the world had been shoved onto her shoulders, all for betrayal. She was dimly aware of Luke (a friend or foe) and Atlas (a foe) , and someone else, standing there, watching. She wasn’t sure. It was hard to see anything when her mind delayed any comings and goings for just a few seconds.
Sweat had meddled in her eyes. She couldn’t clear it away.
Ringing echoed in her ears. She couldn’t scream for it to stop.
But every cell in her body screamed, and it wouldn’t stop. Everything screeched and cried and hollered, but she was sure that she made no sound.
All she wanted was for someone to take this agony, this torture, away from her. To burn it just like it was burning her.
More rocks fell.
Blurs from the outside of her hellish sphere discussed things.
Laughter.
Crying.
Ichor.
Ichor.
It trailed from someone’s legs like fresh honey. An immortal. She couldn’t hold her chin up to see who it was, however.
But that person made themselves known.
Artemis. She’d kneeled down next to Annabeth. Her face was streaked with gold. More ichor. Then she turned to say something, maybe to Luke. The goddess seemed distressed, angered.
Luke. Traitor. Friend.
Traitor.
A clang followed, and she had just enough energy to lift her eyes and see the chains that now littered Artemis’ feet. She’d somehow been trapped, like her, and—
More pressing weight from the sky. More backstabbing pain.
I am going to die.
And if she was going to die, she wouldn’t be able to breathe, and if she wasn’t going to breathe, she wouldn’t hope.
Better to die than hope, then.
Artemis’ flashing eyes appeared from the depths of her darkened vision.
Annabeth understood too late what was about to happen.
Chains free. Distressed goddess. Ichor. Laughter.
This was a trick played beautifully by Atlas—and Luke. They wanted to see Artemis trapped, just like her. They also wanted Annabeth free.
She let out a groan, a sound of protest. It was no use.
Artemis had already taken her place, holding what had nearly toppled over. Annabeth’s shoulders had never felt so light.
The last thing she saw was Percy’s face. His dimpled smile and his eyes the color of the sea on a clear day and his curly hair.
“Sleep tight, Annabeth,” he said.
Then he faded away, and she saw nothing at all.
While I breathe, I hope.
.
Percy had rescued her before. It went both ways, really, but this felt familiar. Riding some kind of horse—this time on Blackjack—with him tucked behind her, flying to safety. Well, she wasn’t sure if meeting the gods at the winter solstice could count as “safety,” but it was close enough.
He came for me.
Thalia flew closeby, on a pegasus with Grover. She remembered the knowing smile the daughter of Zeus had given her, right after Grover had crushed her into a hug.
“He didn’t come for Artemis,” she’d said, talking about Percy. It was hard not to blush.
Afterwards, They’d taken to the sky, dark comets streaking through the stars, through Zoë.
The guilt of what had happened would come to grasp her with greedy fingers, but it was smothered by Percy’s arms around her. Just like in Siren Bay. Just like after leaving Polyphemus’ island, injured and barely conscious.
And as New York’s city lights replaced the stars in the sky, that feeling of warmth also overcame the dread of what was to come.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “For everything.”
The wind tickled her words, just like it did her face, but Percy still heard.
Her neck was barely craned to him, and yet, she could see how close they were now. It made her grip onto Blackjack’s neck tighter.
He gave her one of those rare smiles, as though he’d been caught in the moment.“You don’t have to thank me for anything.”
She thought about Luke, for a second. He would always love her; that’s what he’d promised. They were family. And then again, Percy was always with her when she needed it the most. Ironic, maybe. But she couldn’t dwell on it.
Instead she said, “You did kind of save me, though.”
“Yeah, but you already thanked me, like, a bazillion times.” He tilted his head sideways. “Besides. You would’ve done the same for me.”
.
Percy meant to tell her. But the words were tangled up in his throat, just like they had been when the Olympian council debated on killing him.
Destroyer, they’d proclaimed.
Perseus. Destroyer.
In the end, Artemis hadn’t chosen Annabeth as a member of the hunt. But rather, Thalia.
Annabeth was alive and she wasn’t a hunter and from then on, he could breathe properly.
.
Staring at that lock of grey hair, she recalled the events that led them here. A pain that they both shared now.
She touched the streak gently, and they stayed there, swaying to their secretive music. It was the kind of song that stitched them together, two souls molded into one horrible moment.
But it was more than just the horror that connected them. In the vibrancy of Olympus, it felt like they were creating the beautiful moments, too. They’d become a luster that outshined the rust in their thread of life.
“So,” she said, swaying to the music. “What were you going to say to me earlier?”
“Athena doesn’t approve,” he mumbled, not meeting her eyes.
“What?”
“I just...I wanted to say that…” He grabbed her wrists that were currently locked around his neck, taking her hands in his. This time, his gaze landed on her, only her. “You mean so much to me. I never want to see you go.”
Annabeth shook her head; she still didn’t understand where this was going. “You won’t. I changed my mind—about the hunters.”
Percy breathed out a laugh. “I didn’t think I could feel so relieved in my life.”
“Me neither,” she smiled. “I don’t think that kind of life was for me, anyway. But…what does my mom have to do with this?”
He regarded her for a few seconds, until he finally relented. But not before checking both ways in case Athena was around.
“She knows what I want to tell you, but she doesn’t approve.”
“And that is…”
Maybe she had some idea as to what was going on. But she wanted to hear it from him.
It was exhilarating and frightening all at the same time.
He took a deep breath; when he spoke, the words tumbled out of his mouth like burnt offerings.
“I want to be with you—but not if you don’t want me to. As more than friends. It’s cool if you think it’s too fast, though, or...I just—I thought you’d leave me, and that scared me so much. And—I realized that I really like you. But only, only if you want to, obviously.” He pursed his lips. “I’ll just shut up, now.”
As more than friends.
I really like you.
She didn’t think she was prepared to hear this. It sent her reeling, tumbling into echoing chambers where it was only her and Percy’s words. Over and over.
“Annabeth? Are...you okay?” he asked.
She blinked, and she saw everything clearer. The softness of his voice, his eyes, concerned. The sensation of her hand in his. The plumpness to his lips. She wanted to kiss him, and badly.
“Mom doesn’t approve?”
He shrugged. “I mean, I guess.”
“I want to, though.”
Annabeth felt her cheeks flush at that, but she didn’t care.
“You’re...sure?”
“Yeah, Seaweed Brain. If you haven’t noticed: I really like you, too.”
“Really?” His eyes were wide, filled with wonder. But then he cleared his throat. “I mean, cool. That’s...cool.”
She snorted. “Okay, now—come here.”
And that’s when she kissed him. And everything felt perfect.
Though there was something that she’d forgotten. Something that had lured her into wanting to join The Hunters in the first place.
The hero’s soul, cursed blade shall reap.
She squashed it down. Prophecies have double meanings, anyway.
.
“I do not approve of your friendship with my daughter.”
Athena had told Percy this. She’d told him many things. Like how his fatal flaw was personal loyalty, but she herself didn’t seem so sure.
But Athena was right, she was always right.
Except when it came to Annabeth. He didn’t care if she didn’t approve.
(Maybe that was his mistake.)
.
Annabeth thought that they could manage long distance—and they could—they’d been successful in calling daily and sending emails.
It was fine; she was finally happy.
Something in her had clicked at getting to see Percy smile at her when she’d call him her boyfriend, all sweet and loving, or just whenever he appeared on the IM. Her stomach filled with butterflies whenever he laughed at her jokes and whispered “goodnight” like a soft melody. Even though she never dared say, “I love you.”
It was all fine and good.
Until Luke appeared.
He’d knocked on her door, and her stepmother had answered.
She’d expected someone from camp, when Helen had called to her. There was a small flicker of hope there, that it was Percy.
But when she opened the door and stepped outside, her heart stopped. Her breath hitched.
“You,” she said through clenched teeth. Before he could react, she’d pointed her knife at him, slick and quiet as a panther.
His gaze flicked to that old  knife, and he had the nerve to smile.
“You still use my knife.”
She ignored him, moving closer, pointing the blade directly at him. “You here to finally finish me off?”
He patted his pants and shirt, then carefully raised his arms.
“I’m unarmed, see? Just wanted to have a talk, that’s all.”
“Like you wanted to have a talk back on Mt.Othrys? When you left me there, to die?” Her voice shook, but she held her ground.
Luke winced. “Five minutes, Annabeth. That’s all I’m asking.”
He looked terrible, like he’d aged twenty years. Every word he muttered out seemed to steal a part of him, leaving him there to rot. His skin stuck to his face, pale and hollow.
“Consider this as a truce,” he said. “I don’t plan to hurt you. I swear on the Styx.”
Thunder boomed. Reluctantly, she lowered her knife. But she wasn’t stupid, that knife wouldn’t go anywhere.
“And what do you want to talk to me about?”
“I need your help.”
She shook her head. “Luke, you know I can’t—”
“Kronos,” he breathed. “This is about Kronos.”
Her hand tightened against the pommel of her blade. She waited for him to elaborate.
“He...wants to use me as a stepping stone. He’s gonna take over the world, if I let him.”
“I thought that’s what you wanted.”
“You don’t understand, Beth.”
At the mention of that nickname—that so few people ever used—she had no choice but to meet his eyes. They’d once been a bright blue. Now, they were shattered discs. Like his mother’s.
“I…” He moved his jaw from side to side, a nervous tick that had plagued him ever since coming to camp. “I can’t possibly do it. He’s gone too far, and I have no choice but—”
“ Why are you telling me this, Luke?”
“Because—”
“You know what? Whatever it is, I can’t help you.”
He opened his mouth to argue, but she spoke before that could happen.
“You nearly killed me, Luke. You get that? You nearly killed me. Do you know how messed up that is? How, how could you do that? We were family once!” She was screeching now, her voice reverberating across the cobbled San Francisco streets.
She felt the sharp sting of tears, but she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of letting them fall.
Maybe by now, everyone in the neighborhood was listening in, but she didn’t care. She wanted to scream. She wanted to hurt him like he had to her.
A shadow crossed his face. Guilt. He felt guilty.
Traitor. Friend.
“Look, I...I know this won’t mean anything to you, but I’m sorry.” Her eyes fixed themselves on anything but him. “I just—he’s using me, Annabeth. In everything.”
“And what am I supposed to say to that? Too bad? I’m sorry? This was your choice!”
“No, you don’t understand.” His entire body shook. Annabeth had never seen him so terrified, so unstable. He’d changed, she realized, from that confident hero she’d once looked up to. “I want to run, ‘Beth. Fuck everything. I can’t take it anymore. I want to—to go with you.”
He’d left her utterly disarmed, her armour melting away. Was Luke...actually switching sides?
“Go...with me?” she asked, voice barely above a whisper.
“Yes,” he gasped. “Gods, yes.”
“So you’re...having second thoughts? You want to go to camp?”
Hope blossomed in her heart, no longer the shriveled flower that it had once been.
Luke sighed. He ran a hand through his hair, through that grey streak. It was a symbol now, representing the two people she’d bled for the most.
“No,” he said, and that hope began to wilt once more. “You still don’t get it. I want to run, like the old days. Get away from all of this crap. From the Titans and the gods—everything. Just me and you, and we can finally be free.”
She laughed, water leaving her hope alone and escaping, running down her cheeks instead. “More like you don’t get it.”
“As if you knew even the slightest bit about what’s going on.”
“Wake up, Luke! This isn’t a fucking fantasy! People are counting on you—on me! And the old days are over! They’re over...because of you!”
“No, they’re over,” he insisted, “because of Thalia.”
“Please, Thalia made her choice—”
“Just as you’re doing now and just as I did before! Run with me, Annabeth, or let me die in the hands of Kronos. There is no in between. I wouldn’t leave you like Thalia did. You know Kronos controls me, you know the only way for me to escape him is to hide.”
She still shook her head. “No, no we have to stop him. We can’t just run like cowards, that’s not how it works! And I can’t leave Percy—”
“Ah.” His eyes blazed with a strange light, as though he’d found a missing puzzle piece. “So that’s what this is about. Percy .” He chuckled to himself. “He’s going to leave you in the end, you know that, right?”
Despite the dryness to his tone, Annabeth felt like his words were drowning her in an eternal pool of memories.
Worthless.
Freak.
Your mother didn't want you. Your father didn't, either.
And then…
A single choice shall end his days.
“You don’t know anything about Percy and me,” Annabeth seethed.
He sneered. “Oh, but I do. A little bird told me that you’re finally dating him. That he’s controlled every single thing about you since day one, leading you right to his trap.” His lips widened to a grin, watching her face. “Yes, I have spies. I’m sure you knew that already, though.”
A voice screamed in her head, that all he did was lie; that he was the one controlling her. But right now, nothing seemed logical, only that grin of his and the way it was crushing her garden of hope.
“You need me, Annabeth. More than you will ever know.”
Tears fell down her chin, swam in her eyes, distorting Luke. He stood there, silent, waiting for her to fall like prey to the arrow.
Yes. Go with him, rid yourself of responsibility.
No. Percy saved you from Luke. You love him, even if he might die.
Yes.
No.
Yes—
“There’s no way, Luke. After everything you’ve done...and now you’re asking me to leave the people I love? And no, Percy has never controlled me. Like Thalia did, hell, like you did— I made my choice. To stick up to him even when I know he might leave. Because I care for him, and he cares for me! Unlike you!”
He scoffed, moving closer to her. He could probably hear her thumping heart.
“Those are his words, not yours. Honestly, I thought you’d be better than this, Annabeth. Better than being with that bastard. Listening to him instead of me. We’ve been through so much together, have experienced more things than you and him will ever share. He wants me dead. He wants me to destroy our world by letting Kronos take over me.”
“You can still choose to side with us, Luke,” she begged, voice cracking. “It doesn't have to be this way!”
“Ah, choosing, choosing, ” he laughed, stooping to her eye level. She couldn’t escape, back against the door. “You see, Annabeth, with choices...sometimes...you don’t have one.”
She still held her knife; he was close enough for her to easily stab him with it. As though reading her thoughts, he stepped away from her, only for him to extend his arms. An invitation.
“Go on, do it. Fight me. Your beloved mother would approve, you know. Wise thing to do and all that. After all, this is the last chance you’ll get.”
She was silent, mouth parched, while her eyes rained down more and more tears. It was strange, the way he talked like he wouldn’t exist anymore. The way he implied that Kronos would do something to him.
Staring at him, openly waiting for her killing blow—she couldn’t do it, no matter how much she wanted to.
You loved him once, like he loved you. Or does he still love you?
No matter how hard she tried, her heart still held a part of him. Her knife slipped from her hand.
“I see,” he said. “You’re still that small, seven year-old girl. Weak and helpless.”
“Get out.”
He let out a breath. “For the record, you’ve just helped his plans stay in motion. When the world ends and crumbles at your feet, remember that you had your chance, and you didn’t take it.” He closed the distance between them again, only for her to shove him off.
“Get out, and don’t even dare touch me.”
He did listen to her, lowering one foot to the bottom step of the porch, but not before turning around, regarding her. Something like disgust brimmed in his eyes.
“This will all be your fault. You and siding with Percy Jackson. One day, he’ll be your undoing.”
“I said, GET OUT!”
.
“Annabeth? What happened?”
“Nothing, just...had a disagreement.”
“Was it someone from camp?” her stepmother asked.
Annabeth knew that Helen tried to make an effort with her nowadays, but she still didn’t feel like sharing anything. With anyone. Least of all her.
“Something like that,” she managed to mutter out, before she turned and dashed for the stairs.
She crashed in her bed, feeling the sobs already.
Stepping stone. What had he meant by that? Was Kronos going to kill him?
Suddenly her room seemed much too small for her. Shortness of breath. That’s what she felt.
The world might end and it will be your fault.
You could’ve killed Luke, once and for all, and saved Percy.
You could’ve—
She screamed into her pillow, deafening the sound. Deafening her cries, brutal and untamed. To her, it was never clear when she fell asleep that day. Only that, eventually, she did.
At first, she dreamed of the ocean. She’d always admired it from afar; it was the perfect work of art. Swirling colors that changed hues with the light. The ocean was the mirror of the sky, only more powerful. She knew this because she knew its offspring. She knew Percy.
He was there, standing atop dark, jagged rocks. They were black, a stark contrast to the blues and greens. His hair whipped around in the wind, though that was the only thing moving about him. His hair and nothing else. Then she realized that the sea wasn’t moving either. It didn’t take long for the wind to stop its whistling, as well.
She longed to run to him, to kiss him, to hug him...but she was a third-party spectator, drifting off into the sky as if her soul was unanchored to her body.
Meanwhile, the world held its breath.
Control, a voice whispered.
She tried to speak, but her lips wouldn’t move.
Control, it whispered again. That’s all he wants.
Percy chose that moment to look up. His eyes were dark, she could tell, even from her distance. Dark and green. Before she could so much as attempt to call his name, he dove into the mass of water, away from the rocks, and disappeared into the safety of the sea.
It is fatal. But it is his.
She turned. And there it was, that voice. She gasped when she saw the figure from which it was coming from. Luke. He was levitating just like her, in the middle of the ocean and sky. Only his eyes didn’t match the background. They were golden . Everything about him glowed, from his skin to that facial scar. His voice wasn’t his, not really. It sounded like rocks grinding, like rotten apples, like —
Luke … that face, stared down on her. Then the voice came, that horrible, rasping voice. His lips split into a smirk. “They don’t call flaws ‘fatal’ for nothing.”
She screamed, and everything disappeared
This time, her dream shifted to camp. She was sitting by the lake, her hair dripping wet. Luke was there, too. Normal Luke. The one who used to smile and ruffle her curls whenever she talked about architecture, the one who wore orange t-shirts and sandals and was looked up to as camp counselor. Next to him, she seemed much smaller, helpless. But it dawned on her that she felt this way because she was, in fact, much smaller than him.
This was a memory—when she was around nine, maybe.
“You know we can try again, right?” Luke was saying.
He was gentle when he dragged her into his arms and he was gentle when he held her there, keeping her warm.
“The naiads tried to drown me,” she said, sniffling. “I’m not swimming again. Not in a million years.”
“I thought you wanted to be the best swimmer at camp?”
His eyes were blue, she noted; they matched the calm waters of the lake. Normal blue and normal Luke. Just as it always should’ve been.
She looked away, arms crossed.
“Irene was right. Athena doesn’t belong in the water.”
“Hmm. Maybe Athena doesn’t. But you aren’t Athena. You’re Annabeth, and you can do anything.”
“Tell that to the naiads,” she grumbled.
He smiled, making his eyes crinkle. “I did. And they agreed to let you be. I do have some charm, you know.” He wiggled his eyebrows. “The ladies can’t resist.”
She shoved him, grimacing. “Yuck!”
“Hey, girls love it! Now, come on.” He stood, and in he went to the canoe lake, disrupting the peace of the smooth water and splashing her everywhere. Holding his arms up, he signaled for her to jump as well.
She shook her head at him.
“Aw, come on! Don’t be scared, ‘Beth! I won’t let go of you. I won’t let you drown.”
“…Promise?”
“Promise.”
She didn’t need to hesitate anymore; all she did was jump into his waiting arms.
I won’t let go of you.
I won’t let you drown.
But he did. Time was cruel; no wonder Kronos wished for a war, for revenge. Time brought change and destruction. Birth and death. It shriveled things and turned them to dust. Luke may have loved her once, but Time broke them both apart into tiny shards of glass.
.
School was on the farthest corner of her mind the next day. She woke to the feverish sun sneaking through her pale curtains. Immediately, she wanted nothing but to curl under the covers. To melt into them like candle wax until no one remembered her. Or better yet, so that everyone would grieve. So that they would look for her in every corner of the world but never find a single trace. She’d be a legend, a strange happenstance from that past.
“Ah, yes. Annabeth Chase. The girl who vanished and shook the world with her mystery.”
Nothing like that happened. Though she did stumble into the bathroom from the nausea, only for her stomach to find nothing but water. She dry heaved and cried, tremors running up and down her body. She must’ve collapsed—lost her balance—because for a while, she laid there, on the cool bathroom tiles and staring at the wooden ceiling like some discarded doll.
Her father found her in that state. He rushed to her, wrapping her in his arms like she was five years old all over again and tucking her in bed.
Her eyes fluttered open a few times, catching Frederick’s wrinkled forehead and wrinkled eyes. He was worried. Concerned. She wasn’t going to lie: that was a nice change.
“—A fever,” he said. She didn’t hear the rest.
Helen said something in response. Annabeth couldn’t focus on that, either.
“I’ll stay by her bedside until she wakes up. Maybe that’ll help,” her father said.
I should be sick more often, she thought, then drifted off to sleep.
Hellish nightmares followed her there. Some were of Percy, burning alive. Others were of Luke, his eyes golden. Once in a while, she’d wake up, only to feel her eyes weigh down on her face. All those times, she’d have no choice but to welcome her nightmares again.
Hours or years or days passed before she could manage to be awake fully. The sound of a typing computer lulled her brain, but she had a mission; she wouldn’t let her mind slip away. She craned her neck to where the clicks and clacks echoed from, blinking a few times in the process.
There sat her dad, on her desk chair.
“Dad?” she croaked.
He turned, then beamed once he saw her fully awake.
“Hey, sweetheart. How’re you feeling?”
“Mm. Better.” She yawned, sitting up fully. “How long was I out?”
Frederick wheeled his chair toward her, arms resting on his thighs and brows furrowed. “Since yesterday morning.” He held his palm out and touched her forehead, murmuring, “Fever’s gone, at least. We should take you to a doctor, though, now that you’re awake.”
“No, wait. Dad. I’m not—”
“You’re not sick?” he finished for her, eyebrows raised. “The evidence presented in front of me says otherwise.”
“Yeah, I know, but…I was fine before, and this happened after I saw…”
“Your friend?”
“I mean, he’s not—” But she stopped herself before she could say, ‘ he’s not my friend.’ Instead she nodded and said softly, “Luke, yeah.”
Frederick handed her a glass of water, and she drank, slowly and carefully.
“I don’t pretend to understand everything going on with this…second titanomachy,” her dad said. “But I…I’m worried, Annabeth.”
Why did his visit make you sick? What is going on?
She knew that’s what he meant to ask. But the comment was left unsaid, a strange buzzing filling into the after-pause.
She shrugged. “Probably the nightmares. Sometimes that can happen, just never…to this extent, I guess.”
She watched him purse his lips. He knew almost nothing about her, even if, these days, he tried. He tried, but she still had half of a goddess. It was a part of her that he would never fully see, hidden away from his eyes in case it ever became a nuisance, a disturbance.
.
Recovery came quickly. Nevertheless, she missed half a week of school. She made sure to study and email her teachers—finish everything she had to finish—but really, that was just an excuse to not think about anything else.
Like Percy, for one.
What Luke had told her stayed in the shadows of her days. Her dreams, too—as well as her strange illness. Or at least the memory of it. She hadn’t lied to her dad when she’d said that dreams affected her in more ways than one, but this was a new record.
A god was trying to warn her of something. Perhaps it was Kronos’ doing, even. In any case, the dreams had taken a toll on her.
Percy and Luke and everything had taken a toll on her.
How much truth had been shown in her dreams?
Were they prophetic? What would happen to Luke with those unnerving, glowing eyes?
He’d talked in a voice that wasn’t his—an ancient voice—warning about Percy and control.
They don’t call flaws ‘fatal’ for nothing.
The last time she and Percy talked about fatal flaws, neither of them knew what his flaw was. Yours is hubris. Carrying the world on your shoulders feels easy, doesn’t it?
But what was Percy’s? Could it really be…
There was this terrible feeling, a tightening in her chest.
Suddenly, she was aware of an incoming IM. The air in front of her shimmered like water. Percy. Fuck. Without thinking, she swatted at the mist with her hands, clearing it away before it could form into the image of her boyfriend.
That’s when she realized: Percy couldn’t see her like this. He knew her too well; he would ask questions and she’d have no choice but to answer. For some reason, she couldn’t trust herself to bring up Luke in front of him. To bring up her dreams.
In came another call. With a swish of her arm, it disappeared again.
She could imagine Percy’s confused expression as he sat on his bed, wondering why his girlfriend had deliberately decided not to answer. So she stumbled over to her desk and opened her laptop. She unlocked her email and typed:
I’m sorry Perce. I was going to tell you that I can’t answer because my cousin Magnus is in town. He’s with me in my room at the moment. Didn’t want to freak him out lol. Also he’ll stay here for a bit. Probably until June. I hope it doesn’t bother you so much but I think that we should communicate via mail. Less risky and all that haha. So yeah I hope you’re well and say hi to Sally for me <3
Your gf,
Annabeth :)
She clicked send.
Gods, she hated herself sometimes.
Coward, Luke’s voice taunted, in her mind.
“Shut up,” she muttered.
But it was the truth. She couldn’t even face her boyfriend. Couldn’t even tell him about what was on her mind.
You think that he might leave, once he sees how weak you are. You couldn’t even see your oldest friend without it taking a physical toll.
She swatted those thoughts away like she did with Percy’s Iris Messages, but it was no use. They were here to stay, drawn with permanent markers in her brain.
Percy replied right away. He told her that it was fine—that not to worry. It would only be a month until they saw each other in person, anyway.
See Percy. After all this time.
They’d planned that, too. Annabeth would take a detour to New York City before arriving at camp, and they’d spend the afternoon at the movies like a normal teenage couple before they had to act the complete opposite of that.
A small, horrible part of her was glad that she’d lied to him. That she could fall on the excuse of her cousin Magnus—never mind that she saw him last when she was seven and had no news of him since then.
She had to, though, she had to lie to protect him from herself. So she curled up in her bed and waited for June.

Am I the only one who desperately wants to know how the gods and Titans reacted to a prophecy child with a name meaning “to destroy”? Like, the Titans must have been practically ecstatic, what with the line about razing Olympus and the prophecy child’s name essentially being Destroyer, they probably thought they were pretty much guaranteed to win the war and for Percy to side with them
I do wonder if they worried too much.
Like, I do get that it’s something brought up a bunch, but a child of Zeus was named that too. Is it something that would be pointed to by those against Percy? Possibly.
The fact that he’s the prophecy child might make them wary, but no more than him being the prophecy child and his general attitude would.
I think that the name would only solidify their beliefs, not cause them. The Titans aren’t dumb enough to base their opinions on the name alone, Percy would have to act in ways to support it as well.
I mean, I think it might be interesting, but the fact is that Percy was named after a previous hero so shrugs I don’t think that it would have a large impact on their opinions.

So in Give it Form, you've touched on it a bit in reply comments, but while Sora is with the HB Gang, what's going through their heads? Their thoughts, their feelings? A perspective we won't see in the fic (or at least not for a while).
This is a wonderful, though provoking question that I saw late, but don't let that make you think I appreciate it any less. It's always exciting to talk about If You Give It Form.
So let's think about this a moment. I’m going to get a little long here so, let’s do a read more. I’m also going to tag some others who might have an interest in this, though if you don’t, then no obligation to even read. (ALSO SOME  CHAPTER FIVE SPOILERS)
@complicatedandstained @anewarise @soraaly
Yuffie
Yuffie's thoughts and feelings surrounding Sora are self-centered, and there's nothing wrong with that. She has the least compassion for him and his destiny overall, or even regret for getting off on the wrong foot because
1) They are close in age, so she sees a peer instead of thinking "oh he's so young to have such a weighty destiny." Plus, nobody ever cut her breaks (in her mind) so Sora shouldn't get coddled
2) Radiant Garden fell when she was relatively young and young memories are further blurred as a body defense mechanism against trauma. Refugee life on Traverse Town is what she knows, and that's a life where you see new people with new baggage and hear of new worlds falling and people dying on the regular. It's a life where you adapt and you struggle to grab what you can, and a place where nothing is ever really yours unless you make it so and you occupy "claimed spaces" like the waterway.  This means Sora is "wrong" for both fixating on the past and for acting like Yuffie targeted him. Yuffie doesn't target people as much as filter them out so she doesn't risk catching pesky guilt feelings. Sora should respect her hustle and she gave him his stupid necklace back when he became a person instead of just a vague defined shape transporting valuables.
3) She did feel a little bit guilty, but then Aerith (Aerith!) started pressuring her to apologize--and both her own emotions and being "bullied" into being sorry as the new guy "tries to drive a wedge between her and her friends before he's even said a word"  make her mad.
So she feels free to be a brat to Sora and it would have started a cycle of them just being brats to each other. At the same time though, Yuffie wouldn't have any teeth in her opinion of Sora as a brat with a chip on his shoulder. Her moods change as quickly as the wind, and she would also be trying to joke around with Sora all the time and under the assumption they are friends...until he says something that ticks her off or he proves he still not over the whole "tried to mug you" thing (like, get ooover it) and then they are sworn enemies for approximately five minutes.
She'll be genuinely disappointed when Leon returns from Olympus without Sora, but vocally scoff "Who needs him?" and half mean it because she only truly buys into this keybearer savior rhetoric because it is what Aerith and Leon buy into.
Aerith
Aerith knows Sora's importance. She doesn't just hope like Leon or Cid. She doesn't consider that Sora may just be the holder of the key for now. She sees Sora and she knows she's looking at the savior or destroyer of the worlds. It's weighty stuff, especially since Yuffie and Leon already made a bad impression on the boy in the first meeting. She, in true Aerith fashion, decided right away to keep her certainty a secret. Knowing won't be helpful to anyone else. Aerith is certain of that too. Is she right? Is it just hubris? That's up to interpretation. She definitely had a little bit of blind pride thinking she could smooth things over with Sora, though not as much as the others have on her behalf. She knows she's not infallibly charming or even successfully manipulative. She saw that Sora agreeing to stay with them was a victory in technicality only. She tried to be sincere with him after that first meeting--not that she was ever technically insincere in the first place--but it is a difficult balance because why she does think Sora is a charming young man and wants to give him the friendship and show him the understanding and compassion he deserves, they do badly need him on their side, so there can never be true objectivity or selflessness. Moreover, he needs to pushed at a certain pace if there are going to be worlds left to save and they all want to live to see them restored. Beyond that, Aerith is also the only one who, at this early point, fully realizes that there is reason to be scared of Sora not just scared for him. She is going to be besides herself when Leon comes back without Sora, but bury it down, only letting out a sigh and saying he's in fate's hands not and they have to trust in his heart to guide him, because she does believe in Sora's good heart, even if she didn't get a chance to know him as well as she would like.
Cid
This man only wants to keep his family together. He isn't sure about this keybearer because he doesn't want to be sure. He had some of his explorer heart and spitfire nature crash and burn upon exit from the falling Radiant Garden though he doesn't show it outwardly.  There's a reason you never find him in the coliseum. If it were at all practical, he'd keep Cloud, Leon, Aerith, Yuffie, and Sora all on Traverse Town with him. Yuffie would take over the accessory shop. Aerith would have a flower shop. Leon and Cloud would be working with the displaced refugees with Aerith on consult. Sora would be his assistant and they'd make a fleet of gummi ships for different clients and occasions. Cid is a practical man though. He knows what needs to be done and he's already let go of all of them...though it doesn't make it easier, especially after what happened to....well, we'll get to that (kind of) in Leon's section. He won't be seen for days after Sora leaves and then he'll come out with a gummi blueprint of a ship shaped like a crown, drafted in slightly shaky lines like it was drawn while drunk. Also, on a different topic, I think he does know how shady Ansem the Wise was, but you've got to believe in some heroes in life, so he wills himself to discount it.
Leon
Leon is a series of traumatic backstories stacked on top of each other, held together by belts, and pretending to be cold steel. He's a little bit more well-adjusted than FFVIII's Squall "If you want someone to listen, go talk to a wall" Leonhart (And, granted probably a little less well adjusted than what is seen in canon Kingdom Hearts) but he is a man constantly on the edge of a breakdown and repressing everything, and he expects everyone else to be the same, and, moreover, requires it to a degree so he can continue to function.  He's either an orphan, or, if he embraces the "far out" theory that  Laguna Loire not only is his father, but is actually a keybearer who disappeared because he ran off planet...which, hold everything for a detour, IS CLOSER TO KINGDOM HEARTS CANON THAN YOU THINK
Laguna Loire was supposed to be a stranded keyblade wielder in the mirage arena in BBS. but was cut from the game, and there are sources on this, though this is all I was able to recall on a moment's notice.
Tumblr media
The more you knoooow.
Anyway, KH Laguna Loire is a keyblade wielder and a deadbeat dad. That's a fact.
So, yeah, if Leon admits Laguna might be his dad then he admits his dad maybe ran out and didn’t want him (Is the truth more nuanced than that? Duh, but we aren’t talking about that now). Here we have Squall Leonhart. Abandoned before he was even born. Sister abducted to be experimented on. Considered unadoptable because he was a feral problem child. One person he was close to (Seifer) died when Radiant Garden fell (so he thinks).  And then there's Rinoa.
If you missed the implications about Rinoa in chapter five, let me spell it out for you.
"Cid, Cloud, Aerith, Yuffie, Rinoa, and I were the only survivors of Hollow Bastion." Leon was firm, perhaps for his own sanity. "Now there's even less."
Rinoa died an unspecified time after Radiant Garden's fall.
Then there's this quote from Hades and Maleficent's later response.
"Remember what happened to the last one? We got back an Angel Star and a Bad Dog and what does that get us? Zilch!"
"The case was..." Maleficent hesitated a moment, trailing a finger in an absent repeated ring around the top of the bulb of her staff, " different with the sorceress."
I'll not comment, but have some pictures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll get to how long Rinoa survived on Traverse Town, her relationship with Leon, and the circumstances of her kidnapping and subsequent death later on in the story. Fun times.
Come on. You know I had to do it. I was originally going to not have Rinoa or have made her die on Radiant Garden, but, think about Kingdom Hearts 1 canon. Yuffie still accidentally calls Leon "Squall" which implies his name change of shame because he can't protect people and his wanting to die was fairly recent, not nine years ago when RG fell, and people are still adjusting to it. I had to sprinkle on extra flavor.
So why is this all relevant to Leon and Sora? I'm glad you asked.
Like I said, KH Leon/Squall is not FFVIII's Squall "Hell is Other People. Prove Me Wrong" Leonhart that needs to be defrosted throughout the game. He has a found family he accepts and has to admit cares about him, so he's closer to the Squall at the end of FFVIII but he still is stilted and has the mindset that everyone you love will leave or die, so the least painful option is not to care in the first place--especially since he thinks Sora is going to die 100%. Hell, he would be sure he was going to die if he was the keybearer too, which is partially why he wanted the keyblade. Go out fighting the 1000 Heartless Battle.
But he has to befriend Sora, not just train him, and it's painful, especially because Sora requires a lot from people as much of a giver as Sora typically is too. Sora wants to crack him open to see he's not just machinery and it's painful (and it reminds him of Rinoa "I wish you would just voice your feelings, Squall. How else will the people you care about know them?" Heartilly. Whoops). He has to prove his sincerity and niceness to this guy who had the nuclear family and the friends and the peaceful life and was trying to escape, also the boy who was chosen to have the keyblade, also a boy who can't accept that sometimes you just have everyone die on you and though it shatters you, you have to move on and realize they aren't there to look for.
Terrible. Yet Leon tries so hard and fails....and blames himself for failing.
And though he should resent Sora a bit, mostly he's just sad for him too. But Sora is the chosen one and he needs to toughen up so the worlds don't eat him up.
He really hopes Sora is going to be okay, and that it wasn't all his fault Sora is leaving...though it probably is, he thinks. Failed at this too.
